$10 Tuesday is Back, Farm Tour Fun

by Gena Vasbinder on 04/16/12

We have so much to share with you!  First, $10 Tuesday is back by demand. Here's how it works, we email our distribution list with what's available, they choose $10 or more in produce and we arrange to deliver or meet up with them. We have all types of lettuce, spinach, asian greens, turnip greens, kale and green onions. Contact us for more info!
Last Saturday we hosted an open house for our CSA members to come and tour the farm. Our members wanted their kids to learn where and how food is grown! The kids harvested some lettuce and spinach to take home, and took advantage of running and playing in the wide open space. Thank you to those families that made it. Pax and I truly enjoyed the day.

Let the Harvest Begin!

by Gena Vasbinder on 03/27/12

Last weekend we harvested Lettuce, Spinach, Asian Greens and Kale. Although the farmer's markets don't open until the first of May, our CSA members are already enjoying the harvest. We deliver or meet them somewhere so they too can enjoy eating fresh produce before our markets open.  We still have a little room in our CSA.  Let us know if you're interested and you too can be eating fresh greens!
Wondering what to do with all these greens? Have you tried wilting Spinach? Start with olive oil, add a small diced onion, add a few cut Asparagus spears or sliced bell pepper, saute, then add a bag of spinach, Top with sea salt and a balsamic vinegar or glaze. Delicious!
Today for lunch, I added a twist on traditional nachos. I sprinkled shredded cheese over tortilla chips. A quick 30 sec. in the microwave, topped with salsa and roughly chopped Asian greens. Think of the greens as shredded lettuce....and this is sooo much healthier!

Leap Day - Will You Make the Leap?

by Gena Vasbinder on 02/29/12

Do you ever look at grocery store produce and wonder how long ago it was harvested? How many hundreds or thousands of miles did it travel? What chemicals were added to maintain color or extend shelf life? How quickly does it go bad once you get it home?
When you buy directly from a farmer, you have the opportunity to ask these questions. When you join a CSA, you commit your financial support to a farmer in exchange for fresh, healthy produce. You have the opportunity to see exactly where and how your food is grown.
At K & V Farms, we harvest within 24 hours of going to market. Our motto is Fresh Produce, Family Grown.  Get to know us today, and enjoy eating with the seasons.
So, how about it? Will You Make the Leap?

Pass the Seeds Please!

by Gena Vasbinder on 02/28/12

It's another busy week. Pax and I planted onions and spinach in the hoop-house on Saturday. We also planted spinach outside next to the kale that's overwintering. The kale and spinach are coming back to life now with the warmer days. We also covered them with row cover to give them a jump start. Radishes, 3 types of lettuce, spinach, bok choy, kale, turnip greens, asian greens and onions are all growing in the hoop-house.  We prefer to start all of our veggies from seed,  using fish emulsion as an organic fertilizer. Broccoli, tomatoes, all types of peppers, lettuce, bok choy, kale, chard, and herbs are growing nicely under the grow lights. We snapped a picture of the tomatoes this morning to post on Facebook. They're getting what we call their "true leaves."
At this time of year when we gather around the kitchen table, someone says, Pass the Seeds Please! We're sowing seeds every day, getting ready for you!

Member, Friend or Both?

by Gena Vasbinder on 02/24/12

This morning we emailed our CSA members from last year and others who have asked us to keep in touch. These days are busy buying and sowing seeds, planting and caring for the seedlings in our hoop house and keeping the communication open with our customers and market managers.
For us, having a CSA and loyal customers is more than running a business. We get to know these families, and they us. It's more than knowing what they like to eat. We watch the kids grow, we learn their history. We work hard to provide them the freshest fruits and veggies. Their appreciation and loyalty rewards our hard work and dedication. At the end of the season, they are more than Members, they are Friends.
This post is dedicated to our customers. We welcome comments about your experience with K & V Farms.
